ESSEX Free Off-Peak bus passes for residents of Uttlesford

The Essex Free Bus pass is valid for off-peak bus travel anywhere in England for bus travel after 9:30am Mon-Fri (9:00 am in Essex) and all day at other times. Apply anytime - the pass is valid for five years

Who is entitled to a free travel pass? ·

  • Anyone living in Uttlesford who is over 60: there is no means test the pass is your right, whether or not you are retired. ·
  • Registered disabled residents ·
  • Registered blind residents ·
  • Persons who have been refused a driving licence (or had an existing licence revoked) on medical grounds

Why does using a pass help others?

Because almost all our buses are contracted by Essex or Cambridge councils, the survival of each route depends on enough passengers using the service to justify the subsidy. Whether you use or pass or pay the fare, you will still be counted as a passenger and help prevent the routes you use from being closed.

How do I get a pass?

You need an application form and set of instructions. There are several ways of getting these:

What do I need to supply in addition to the completed form? ·

  • Two copies of a passport type colour photo (those provided by automatic photo-machines in many shops are fine) ·
  • Proof that you are over 60 (or are registered disabled or blind or cannot drive on medical grounds)
  • You can use a pension book, driving licence or birth certificate as proof of age - photocopies will do, you do not need to provide important original documents.

How do I submit my application form and documents? ·

  • Post them to Travel Pass Applications, Uttlesford District Council, London Rd, Saffron Walden, Essex CB6 1AN ·
  • Or deliver them by hand (or ask someone to deliver them for you) to the Uttlesford District Council Offices in Saffron Walden or Great Dunmow
  • If you are applying for a pass for the first time you will not get your pass over the counter, it will be posted to you within a few days of your application being verified. ·
  • If you had a (half-fare) bus pass last year, take it with you to the Council Offices - it may be possible to renew it over the counter.

How long do the passes last? ·

Five years from date of issue

Timetables

The all Essex bus timetable can be purchased at the Uttlesford Tourist office (Saffron Walden) or information centres. The latest edition will be published October 2008 and costs £1.00 but you will find the online timetables available for free are more up to date and easier to use. Visit our online timetable page

Does Uttlesford offer taxi or train vouchers instead of a bus pass? ·

It does, they are called National Travel Tokens and you can use them on taxis, buses, coaches or trains anywhere in Britain. · These travel tokens are not free: you have to buy them at half what they are worth for paying your fare · You cannot have tokens and a bus pass: since the tokens will save you only about £15 a year and free travel on Essex buses for a whole year is worth much more than that, for most people the bus pass is the better option ·

Anyone over 60 can buy a national senior rail card (from any railway station). The card costs £19.00 (from UDC) a year and gives a one third reduction on most rail tickets except those in the morning rush hours Details

How do I tell a bus from a coach? ·

It's not as easy as it sounds. All the routes included on our bus maps and timetables are buses. Many long-distance, limited stop, services from Stansted airport are coaches but the express "X" services within Essex are buses.

Can my friends and relations who are under 60 buy a pass like my free one? ·

No: but if your disability or age mean that you need a companion to travel with you when you use the bus, you can request that your Travel Pass is made valid for both you and your companion, giving free travel for both of you when you are travelling together .
